Andreessen Horowitz, Shield Capital back satellite bus manufacturing startup Apex Space

Satellite bus manufacturing startup Apex Space has closed a $16 million Series A round co-led by Andreessen Horowitz and new investor Shield Capital as it prepares for its first demonstration mission early next year. In addition to the new capital, Apex also revealed some of the customers that will be flying payload on that inaugural mission: Orbit Fab, a startup that’s developing technology to refuel spacecraft in orbit; Irish satellite firm Ubotica; and a tier 1 defense prime that Apex CEO Ian Cinnamon told TechCrunch was a “household name.” Apex, founded by Cinnamon and Max Benassi scarcely nine months ago,

India has finally agreed to join the Artemis Accords, a NASA-led initiative to work together with other countries on space exploration and make a return to the moon, after months of silence about joining the program’s 26 other signatories. On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the South Asian nation is joining the non-biding exploration program. “Today, we have taken a giant leap in our space cooperation by deciding to join Artemis Accords,” Modi said while addressing a joint press conference with President Joe Biden in the White House. Brian Armstrong thinks Coinbase could become a ‘superapp’

As the crypto markets continue to face uncertainty, Coinbase’s CEO Brian Armstrong sees greater potential for the digital asset ecosystem to grow. Most people still think of crypto as an asset class that is traded and speculated on, but there are many more use cases for crypto than meets the eye, Armstrong noted during a fireside chat at Coinbase’s State of Crypto Summit on Thursday. For example, the industry is being supported by traditional financial service players like BlackRock, which filed for a spot bitcoin ETF last week, and Fidelity, which backed another crypto exchange. In the next five to

If the ‘Secret Invasion’ title credits aren’t an ethical use of AI art, what is?

This isn’t a facetious question; it’s an unanswered one. What, if anything, is an ethical way to use current generative AI in a major, public-facing work of art? This quandary emerges from the furor regarding Marvel Studios’ use of AI to create the main title sequence of its latest show, “Secret Invasion.” AI generated art — in this climate? By a company with billions to spend? Unacceptable! But this is not quite the secret AI invasion it was initially characterized as. While some revolted at first (and understandably) when they thought that Marvel had simply prompted Midjourney or Runway to

E3 2024 and 2025 aren’t canceled (yet)

The Electronic Entertainment Expo hasn’t been held in person since 2019. Now, it may not be returning for 2024 or 2025 — at least not at the Los Angeles Convention Center. According to an LA City Tourism Commission planning document shared on ResetEra, the video game trade show has canceled its live event for the next two years. The document’s Convention Sales data specifically notes that its data “includes E3 cancellations for 2024 & 2025.” Although the city document suggests that E3 2024 won’t be hosted at the LA Convention Center, the Electronic Software Association itself seems hesitant to confirm

It’s no secret that Microsoft’s purchase of ZeniMax was bound to affect cross-platform releases, but there are now hints gamers might be missing out on some major releases. Under questioning from a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lawyer seeking an injunction against the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal, Bethesda VP Pete Hines has revealed that Disney had a deal with ZeniMax to release MachineGames’ Indiana Jones title on multiple consoles. After Microsoft bought ZeniMax, however, the deal was amended to make it an Xbox console exclusive. The FTC also believes Bethesda’s sci-fi epic Starfield was headed to the PlayStation 5 before the Microsoft

At the start of the month, Facebook’s parent company Meta announced via blog post its intent to remove availability of all news content from FB and Instagram in Canada, should the government pass its proposed Online News Act.
