Twitter admits to having a Verified spammer problem with announcement of new DM settings

As Twitter fends off new competition from Instagram Threads, the company today announced a change designed to cut down on spam in users’ inboxes. Starting “as soon as” July 14, Twitter will introduce a new messages setting aimed at reducing spam in DMs by moving messages from Verified users you don’t follow back to your “Message Request” inbox instead of your main inbox. Only messages from people you follow will arrive in your primary inbox going forward. Notably, these changes will also now apply to everyone who have their inboxes open to allow messages from anyone. Previously, people would only

FTC reportedly looking into OpenAI over ‘reputational harm’ caused by ChatGPT

The FTC is reportedly in at least the exploratory phase of investigating OpenAI over whether the company’s flagship ChatGPT conversational AI made “false, misleading, disparaging or harmful” statements about people. It seems unlikely this will lead to a sudden crackdown, but it shows that the FTC is doing more than warning the AI industry of potential violations. The Washington Post first reported the news, citing access to a 20-page letter to OpenAI asking for information on complaints about disparagement. The FTC declined to comment, noting that its investigations are nonpublic. In February, the regulator announced a new Office of Technology

Federal court rules Ripple’s XRP token can be treated as a security… sometimes

The saga of Ripple Labs, the XRP token, and whether the sale of its crypto token constituted a securities law violation in the U.S. advanced today. In a ruling from the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York, Judge Analisa Torres gave a nuanced view on the matter. In summary, after examining several different sales methods of the XRP token over time, and applying the Howey Test to each, the district judge approved the SEC’s motion for summary judgment with regard to the institutional sale by Ripple of the XRP token. This means XRP is a security

Cowboy rides to the rescue of VanMoof owners with app to unlock threatened bikes

Since struggling e-bike startup VanMoof confirmed it had gone into the Dutch version of administration, there has been a question hanging over the VanMoof bikes out there in the wild. These bikes relied heavily on a connected smartphone app made by the company. The app controlled a number of important settings and functions, not the least of which was actually allowing the bike to start (although there are two non-app options). If VanMoof servers go offline during their administration, VanMoof riders will be left with a less than satisfactory e-bike, which barely works without its software “key.” However, riding to

Can Amazon please show mercy to the brands and products we love?

Digital Photography Review (best known as DPReview) was regarded as one of the best review and news sites, bolstered by a strong community. It was founded at the dawn of the internet, back in 1998, and in 2007, Amazon bought it. The staff was slowly replaced with contractors and freelancers over the years until Amazon killed it in March. The backlash was intense, and the company promised to put the site into an “archive state” so people could still read it, even though no new content would be added. After Amazon very loudly announced it was going to shut the

Simbe’s inventory robots score $28 million in funding

Inventory robots are having a moment. Two days back, Swiss firm Verity announced an $11 million raise. That followed a $20 million round from fellow drone inventory startup B Garage, which, in turn, arrived two days after Gather AI announced it had acquired competitor Ware. That same day, Dexory announced $19 million for its back-of-house shelf-scanning robot. Doing inventory sucks. A lot. Aside from dealing with the occasional irate customer, it was always my most dreaded aspect of working retail gigs. Seeing as how it effectively amounts to collecting and managing data at scale, it’s a pretty prime candidate for

Instagram Threads update brings iOS 17 support among other small improvements

After topping 100 million users just five days after its public debut, Instagram’s new Threads app for iOS is out now with its first update, bringing a handful of small changes and tweaks, added features, and various bug fixes, including support for the recently released iOS 17 public beta. The news of the app’s update was shared on Threads itself by Instagram software engineer, Cameron Roth. He offered a list of what features and changes the new build brings, which thankfully includes the ability to use the app on iOS 17 without crashing — a critical update. Other changes are

Nothing Phone (2) review

Carl Pei seemed practically giddy when he spotted a pretender on the MWC show floor. He posed for a picture status with the phone and fired off a series a tweets. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all — though most in the industry don’t handle it in such stride. For Pei, on the other hand, it signaled that Nothing was on to something. Whatever hang-ups one might potentially have with the company’s approach, there’s one thing you can’t really argue: Its entry into the space was a nice jolt to the arm. As someone who has been
