How to prevent an ‘operational catastrophe’

Julia Ivzhenko Contributor Julia Ivzhenko is head of operations at Futurra Group, an IT company with Ukrainian roots that develops math service MathMaster. Developing a fast-scaling business with a supply side in the early stages requires growing with high dynamics and little resources. Operational mistakes while scaling might have an exorbitant price. We faced it when we decided to break into edtech and launch an education app that aims to provide experts the ability to answer millions of students’ requests in an online chat, almost instantly. We started with a team of 20 people, which was enough to cover the

OpenAI scuttles AI-written text detector over ‘low rate of accuracy’

OpenAI has shut down its AI classifier, a tool that claimed to determine the likelihood a text passage was written by another AI. While many used and perhaps unwisely relied on it to catch low-effort cheats, OpenAI has retired it over its widely criticized “low rate of accuracy.” The theory that AI-generated text has some identifying feature or pattern that can be detected reliably seems intuitive, but so far has not really been borne out in practice. Although some generated text may have an obvious tell, the differences between large language models and the rapidity with which they have developed

Remember Amazon’s Clubhouse competitor? That’s okay — neither does almost anybody else

At the height of the COVID-19 health crisis, when many of us — forced by quarantine rules and social distancing guidelines — were locked indoors and away from public spaces, Clubhouse, the audio-focused social platform, grew explosively. A platform where anyone could talk about . . . well, just about anything, Clubhouse drew millions of users seeking a reprieve from pandemic-induced isolation. Looking to replicate Clubhouse’s success, tech giants began developing their own audio-focused, radio-like products — see Twitter Spaces, Spotify Live, LinkedIn’s Audio Events and Meta’s Clubhouse competitor. Not one to be left in the dust, Amazon, too, got

Apple’s app tracking triggers statement of objections from French competition authority

Bad news could be brewing for Apple in France where the national competition authority has issued a statement of objections related to how it tracks iOS users. The watchdog, L’Autorité de la Concurrence, said today that it suspects the iPhone maker of abusing a dominant position by implementing what it described as “discriminatory, non-objective and non-transparent” conditions for the use of user data for advertising purposes. It has been investigating how Apple uses iOS user data for ad targeting for several years — following complaints by several advertising industry groups, which, back in 2021, sought to have the watchdog block

Growth driven by AI will be the metric to watch this earnings cycle

With Alphabet and Microsoft reporting their quarterly results today, there’s going to be a lot of scrutiny on the ability of their investments in new AI tech to drive growth. The two American tech giants have benefited from their early entrance into this space. Microsoft’s investments in OpenAI, its rapid integration of generative AI into various products, and the rising popularity of some of its services, like Bing, have greatly increased its worth — shares of Microsoft are up around 44% so far this year as of yesterday’s close. The Exchange explores startups, markets and money. Read it every morning

Whither Israel? Israeli tech players comment on the impact of the country’s convulsions

As we covered in April, Israel has become convulsed by “reforms” to the judiciary, proposed by the Benjamin Netanyahu-led government, which passed yesterday. There is now deep concern that the judiciary’s 75-year history as an institution independent and separate from the government could be limited by the ruling political party of the day. Critics of Netanyahu say the changes remove important checks on the executive’s authority and could be open to abuse. Proponents say the reforms will cool the judiciary’s alleged “overreach.” Yesterday, Israel’s parliament ratified the first bill, after compromise efforts collapsed and opposition parties walked out in protest.
